PSC Bring your own device (BYOD) guidelines
Audience
This guideline applies to all students, employees, including permanent and temporary staff, contractors and affiliates, who utilise a physical or wireless connection to PSC network infrastructure via their own device.
Purpose
PSC’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) guidelines will help facilitate and promote innovative teaching methods like active learning, shared workspaces for students with forced WIFI ports to ensure student get the best out of there BYOD
BYOD:
- enables the utilisation of dedicated spaces for student collaboration and active learning.
- provides opportunities for you to utilise your personal devices
- fosters self-reliance, independence, and caters to individual learning preferences
- reduces the risk of sharing equipment.
What if I don't have my own device and what are my options
- If you don’t have a devices, we encourage you to attend BYOD sessions to interact with others, discuss concepts and engage in the learning activity. You can use one of our supplied units in the labs for class but note these units are limited.
- You may also consider attending online versions of these events as they offer equitable learning experiences. Please refer to the timetable for information about online classes.
Recommended system
In general, any desktop or laptop computer purchased in the past two years should be capable of meeting most of your learning needs at PSC. Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones may also enable access to many common communication platforms and learning experiences however, there are likely to be aspects of most courses where the computing capability of mobile devices alone is insufficient.
Software
You will use and have installed on your mobile device software that is required to participate in your PSC classes. A list of required software will be discussed and listed on enrolment day.

Additional hardware requirements
Learning experiences and assessment activities in some units also require you to have access to specific computer equipment, including a microphone/headset, webcam, Hard Drive, etc. To view these requirements, and the expected cost, please refer to the respective unit descriptions.
Minimum Standard Device
- Use a system such as Windows 10 (1809) or later, Mac OS X 10.13 or above (refer to PSC’s Standard Operating Environment).
- Run a modern browser (i.e. current versions of Firefox, Safari or Chrome).
- Run programs to create documents, spreadsheets, student emails and presentations (will we propose using office 365 account for you).
- Connect to PSC's wireless network.
- A web camera and headset.
There are a few ways to access PSC computers on campus including computer labs, the library, Kitchen/ Communal areas. These facilities are available to you during teaching hours and after hours.
Make sure you visit the software library various software to assist you with your studies.
This information provides general guidance on what is required of all PSC students. You should check individual course and unit requirements carefully prior to enrolment and prior to purchasing or connecting devices as there may be additional requirements for some courses.

Long-term care and support of devices
Students are solely responsible for the care and maintenance of their devices.
- You must have a supported operating system and current antivirus software, if applicable, installed on your device and must continue to maintain the latest service packs, updates and antivirus definitions as outlined on the BYOD Student Responsibilities document.
- You are responsible for ensuring the operating system and all software on your device is legally and appropriately licensed.
- You are responsible for managing the battery life of your device. You should ensure that your devices are fully charged before bringing them to campus. PSC will not provide facilities for students to charge their devices but will provide power points to plug in chargers if necessary.
- You are responsible for securing and protecting your device on campus, and while travelling to and from campus. This includes protective/carry cases and exercising common sense when storing the device.
- You should clearly label your device for identification purposes. Labels should not be easily removable.
- You should understand the limitations of the manufacturer’s warranty on your devices, both in duration and in coverage.
- You are responsible for backup of data from your device as well as security management of permissions within provisioned online platform-based shared files and folders.
Damage and loss
Students bring their devices onto PSC campus at their own risk. You are responsible for your own equipment at all times, including in the event of damage or loss.
